Man dies after falling into active Hawaiian volcano
A man has died after falling into an active volcano in a closed area within Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park, authorities said.
The 75-year-old man from Hilo was reported missing by family members from within the park around 12:15 am on Monday.
"National Park Service rangers and Hawaiʻi County firefighters located the man's body about 100 feet (30 metres) below the crater rim, west of the Uēkahuna viewing area at the summit of Kilauea volcano," the National Park Service said in a statement.
Park rangers, assisted by helicopter, recovered the man's body around 8am on Monday local time.
The identity of the man has not yet been released and an investigation is underway.
Kilauea volcano is one of the world's most active volcanos.
It has been erupting continuously along its East Rift Zone since 1983.
In December 2021, residents were asked to stay indoors after the volcano erupted following a series of earthquakes.
A glow was detected within the crater of the volcano's summit and "an eruption has commenced within Kilauea's summit caldera," the Civil Defence Agency (COH) said.
